Chief Executive Officer of Singapore’s National Arts Council, Lee Suan Hiang, is interested in studying notes of ’gamelan’ (Javanese traditional orchestra).
"We want to bring the gamelan notes to Singapore to be used by our artists," Lee said when attending a gamelan show at the Indonesian Arts Institute in Yogyakarta on Friday.<>
He suggested that the gamelan notes be collected in a book so that people from other countries could also study them.
According to him, the various kinds of Indonesian culture have given unforgettable impressions to people who have once enjoyed them.
"Indonesian culture shows good progress with the participation of the younger generation in the efforts to develop it," he was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
Classical music like gamelan could be brought to contemporary arts to make it close to the world of the young people, he said, adding, "such a collaboration would give a new touch to the world of the arts".
He said gamelan was unique and important to be conserved. "Gamelan is also found in Singapore but it is only limited at schools," he added. (dar)
