The association of Islamic boarding "pesantren" schools affiliated with NU well-known as the Rabithah Ma'ahid Islamiyah (RMI) would assemble clerics of pesantrens throughout the country.
The pesantrens' caretakers would reportedly gather at a meeting to take up work programs of the RMI at the Pondok Gede Hajj Dormitory on coming 18-21 May.<<>;br />
At the ulema meeting, there would be about 350 participants representing pesantrens and those of RMI boards throughout Indonesia.
According to the organizing committee chief, Abdul Adhim, the opening ceremony would be opened next Friday (18/5) morning at the Presidential Palace by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Adhim said, the participants would also pray Jumat prayers and istighosah led by senior clerics at the presidential palace.
"The clerics would expectedly arrive from Asrama Haji at seven o'clock," Adhim said.
He added, the work programs discussed by the NU pesantrens' association would focus on three important issues, namely the assurance of the intellectual quality of santri, the development of pesantren economy, and the economic empowerment of pesantren community.
A number of ministers such as Minister of National Education Bambang Sudibyo, Minister of Religious Affairs Maftuh Basyuni, Minister of Communication and Information M uhammad Nuh, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Abu Rizal Bakrie, Minister for Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Surya Dharma Ali, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Freddy Numberi, Minister of Agriculture Anton Apriantono, Minister of Health Siti Fadilah Supari, Minister of Public Housing Yusuf Asyari would present their programs related to the RMI's three issues.
"The contribution of pesantrens to the national developments has now remained very important. Pesantren should be such a simulation's place of the renewal of Islamic thoughts in contributing of developing human resources," Adhim said Thursday (10/5).
He suggested that the effort of rediscovering pesantren's values as an icon of civilization was the absolutely important agenda to take up in the light of our age's civilization progresses.
"Pesantren as the basis rooted from the nation's culture should continuosly develop human resources as well as its flexibility to be the agent of change and development in society," the Committee Secretary, Abdullah Mas'ud said. (nam)
