President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono summoned Coordinating Politics, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto and National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri Tuesday to get an update on how they are handling the violent attacks on two HKBP church figures – Hasian Sihombing and the Rev. Luspida Simanjuntak.

Djoko and Bambang were scheduled to meet the President at the presidential office in Jakarta on Tuesday morning. “The President wants to be briefed on how the attacks against the HKBP church figures are being handled,” presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said as quoted by kompas.com.

The President will also receive noted Indonesian religious leaders. Yudhoyono was initially scheduled to give a statement in connection with the attack, which took place in Mekarjaya, Bekasi, West Java, on Sunday.

The President has been criticized for not issuing a statement condemning the violence against the HKBP church figures, in contrast to his stern statement on the planned Koran burning in Florida, the United States.

Political observer from the Indonesia Survey Institute Burhanuddin Muhtadi, for example, questioned, through Twitter, the President’s stance on the problem of freedom of religion in Indonesia.

“Your response was quick enough against the Rev. Jones. And highly appreciated for that. But why don’t you use the same standards to curb the anarchic actions against the Ahmadiyah and the HKBP?” Burhanuddin writes.

On the Facebook social network, many Facebookers also questioned the President’s stance on events that have taken place here in Indonesia.

Widyaputranto, one of the Facebookers, writes: “Yudhoyono does not have the guts to stand in a press conference and condemn the church burning in Indonesia and the violence against the Ahmadiyah, and speak out for freedom of religion and the freedom to build houses of worship. Don’t just focus on issues to maintain image ... As soon as it deals with an image issue, he is quick to respond, even if only through speeches ...” (jp/dar)
