President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono conducted an aerial observation of the Lapindo mudflow area in East Java aboard a helicopter on Thursday.

The president surveyed the mudflow area from the air after spending the night at a refugee camp in Siman village, Kepung sub district, Kediri distict, during his inspection tour of Mt Kelud in East Java on Wednesday and Thursday.<>

Head of Operations at the Surabaya Police Headquarters, Adj Snr Comm Mega Suparwitha said no special security arrangements were made for the president`s aerial observation of the mudflow area.

"No special security measures were taken because the president conducted the observation from the air before he held a meeting at the VVIP room at Juanda airport," he was quoted by the state news agency as saying.

Earlier in the day, the President visited refugee camps in Siman village, Kepung sub district and met with disaster mitigation workers.

"I am proud of all of you. In every disaster-hit area I visit, I always find Tagana mitigation task force workers. Your are performing a noble duty. Carry on," the president told young members of a disaster mitigation task force.

The rescue workers had been providing evacuation assistance to local people for nine days since the Mount Kelud volcano showed signs of a possible eruption on October 16.

On the occasion Yudhoyono took a few minutes of his time to try on one of the anti-poisonous-gas masks which were prepared for refugees who were forced to abandon their homes for fear of Mount Kelud`s eruption.

The head of state picked one of the masks and tried it out when health officials from Dr Sutomo Hospital in Surabaya were explaining their use.

Since it was part of humanitarian assistance, the president asked the officials to give better service to the refugees and provide them with as many masks as possible.

Then, the president inspected emergency kitchens at Pluncing hamlet to check out the food prepared for the refugees. (dar)
