General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH Hasyim Muzadi would propose the late KH Ahmad Siddiq who had ever for years been a chairman of the NU law making body to be honored as a national hero.
“We want the late KH Ahmad Siddiq to be proposed as a national hero, insya Allah (God willing) PBNU would then talk to related sides,” Hasyim said here on Thursday.<>
The former chairman of the East Java’s NU Regional Board suggested that KH Ahmad Siddiq was eligible enough to be a national hero for his roles in upholding the unitary of the nation through his “OK” of the Pancasila as a nation’s principle at the 26th NU congress in Situbondo in 1984.
“In 1984, KH Ahmad Siddiq made a codification and sources that have for centuries been coming into existence. For that reason, Nahdlatul Ulama would fill the nation of both proclamation and Pancasila with such inclusive syariah (Islamic law),” Hasyim said, adding that his organization would never oppose the syariah to the nation’s principle.
The Secretary General of the International Conference of Islamic Scholars gave an example of a regional regulation being exclusively implemented in a regency. This in turn, he added, had triggered a reaction in Manokwari by urging the local government to implement the same regulation by restricting Muslim women to wear headdress, recite the Qur’an and so on.
Hasyim said the Nahdlatul Ulama would put the mitsaqul Madinah (Madinah Charter) into practice as firm as possible as modeled by the Prophet Muhammad PBUH.
He explained that the Nahdlatul Ulama had so far been developing in Indonesia by defending a universal Islamic law without putting aside the roots of culture and social virtue. (mkf)
