PBNU to support death sentence for drug makers and users

The General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi has expressed his support for the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) in dealing with the death sentence to drugs makers and users.

"I think this (death sentence for drugs makers and consummers) is absolutely a must," Hasyim told reporters after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the PBNU and Indonesia's British Council at the NU office, Jln. Kramat Raya 164 Jakarta on Wedne<>sday.

As for the caretaker of the Al Hikam Islamic boarding "Pesantren" school, Malang, East Java, the death penalty for those whose potentials to kill other people should be carried out instead of giving more opportunity to othoer people to live.

"There is a life in the death sentence," Hasyim said.

At the same time, Chairman of the Advisory Council of the People Awakening Party (PKB), KH Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid asserted the Court decision should be supported.

The Constitutional Court conducted a preliminary examination of a judicial review of Law Number 22/1997 on Narcotics on Thursday, 1 February 2007 at 10 am, but on Tuesday the Court rejected it.

The petition filled by four petitioners, namely Edith Yunita Sianturi and Rani Andriani, the prisoners of the women prison located in Tangerang, and two Australians: Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan who are also undergoing sentence in Krobokan Prison of Kuta, Bali.

The petitioners have been sentenced to death and have undergone trial sessions from District Court until the Supreme Court for committing criminal actions against the Law on Narcotics in the jurisdiction of the Republic of Indonesia. Whereas the death sentence for the petitioners is made under the Articles of threat of the death sentence within the Law of Narcotics. (rif)
