The office of the country's biggest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), located on Jalan Kramat Raya 164 Jakarta may be regarded as a secretariat of all religious adherents.
The statement above was said here on Wednesday (9/5) by Chairman of the Indonesian Communion of Churches, Dr Andreas Anangguru Yewangoe while speaking at an inter-religious meeting held by the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama<>.
According to Andreas, the 8-floor building was most of the time used to hold a religious meeting in taking up various issues related to inter-religious co-existence.
"The (NU) office can be considered as a religious secretariat. For dealing with any problems in the country, we used to gather in this place," he said.
At the Wednesday's meeting, present also General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), KH Hasyim Muzadi, the head of the Bishop's Conference of Indonesia, Cardinal Julius Rijadi Darmaatmaja, and scores of religious figures.
While KH Hasyim Muzadi, who is also the President of World Conference of Religions for Peace said there was such a threat posed by extremists to disturb the peaceful religious life.
"For that reason, it's necessary to have a new alertness among adherents to prevent criminal acts leading to widespread conflict," Hasyim said. (rif)
