NU needs to introspect on emerging terrorism

The existence of individuals committing terrorism acts in the name of struggling for Muslims interest should expectedly be used as a means of self introspection for Muslim organizations including NU.

"Is all this the failure of the ummah and in this case NU itself should question its existence in guiding the ummah including Muhammadiyah and other Muslim organizations," secretary-general of the Advisory Council of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Nazaruddin Umar told NU Online here Monday (10/8).<>

Nazaruddin said that terrorism could not be identical with Islam because any violence in the name of religion would always come into being in any religion, saying that there was no religion for terrorism.

"Throughout history, terrorists have not only been Muslims, there have been Hindu terrorists in India, Catholic terrorists in Europe. So never relate terrorism to Islam for terrorism has no religion," he said.

the police so far was killed during a raid in a house in Beji, Temanggung, Central Java, early on Saturday, after the police besieged the hiding place since 4pm on Friday.

Noordin`s body was now kept at the police hospital in Kramatjati, East Jakarta, for an autopsy and identification.

The police would not as yet confirm if the body was really of Noordin M Top pending the results of a DNA test to be done soon.

The police early on Saturday morning also raided a house in Jatiasih, Bekasi, in which two terrorist suspects were killed namely Air Setiawan and Eko Joko Supriyanto.

The two believed to be involved in several terrorist actions in several places including the bombings of two luxury hotels in Jakarta recently. (mkf)
