Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in now in need of having a leader capable of having a more productive partnership with government and the same time he should also be able to 'keep at a distance' from the government.

Chairman of the NU Economic Institution Subyakto Tjakrawerdaya made the remarks on the sidelines of a meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday (2/9).<>

Subyakto was of view that the partnership is particularly necessary to help increase the economic conditions of NU followers who have predominantly lived in poverty.

Bubyakto said that without the government assistance NU would possibly meet difficulties in empowering its millions of followers mostly living in rural areas.

"But NU must stay critical, must keep at a distance. Deepening partnership with the govenrment does not mean becoming part of the government or being opposed to it," Subyakto said.

He added that the era of ours was global competition, saying whoever winning the (economic) competition "he will come to power."

"The NU followers (Nahdliyin) who are still poor and mostly farmers have competed by themselves, they have been no any helping and protecting them. And if they compete by themselves, they would be the loser," he said.

In addition, the partnership could also be used as a means of defending Pancasila and the Unitary State of Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), adding that there had recently been movements and thoughts willing to replace Pancasila with other ideologies.

"There have now been many young intellectuals of ours who have no attention to the NKRI anymore. Some of them have even admitted not to consider a a problem if Indonesia will in turn be divided," he said.

Subyakto reiterated that NU, the country's largest Muslim organization, had still been consistent with both Pancasila and the NKRI. For that reason, NU should strengthen partnership with the government. (rif)
