The NU 32nd congress has an important and strategic position in the international political constellation. In  uncondusive global security conditions in which Islam has become a key actor, NU as a moderate Islamic power has an important role in keeping the global peace and security.

Researcher of the Japan's Ciba University Prof. Mitsuo Nakamura made the remarks as visiting the PBNU headquarters on Friday, saying that NU had, admitted or not, involved itself in the international political constellation.<>

On account of its internationally significant involvements, NU could brilliantly play its balancing role and even help address any global issues.

Nakamura said that the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization "is now in need of such a assertion" because there have been many global challenges that should be addressed.

Having participated in the NU 28th congress in 1979, Nakamura considered that NU had remained powerful in evolving radical line of thoughts in the sense of very serious and deep ones.

So, not surprisingly if in the religious social organization there have been many NU great thinkers after KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), Nakamura said, adding that there had been no such scene in other organizations in the country.

He was of the view that the international community was now in need of NU  roles in balancing the the world political power in order not to be trapped into extreme dispute poles.

Nakamura believed that NU had still had capability in giving its best to the world community.

"That's why I will always participate in NU congresses. Nevertheless, NU is a phenomenon interesting and important to be taken into account," he said. (mdz)
