Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Masdar F. Mas’udi said that terrorism could not be simplified as a security matter, adding that terrorism had to do with religious ideology and in this case is extreme Islamic ideology.
“So its handling is not just enough with symptomatic security approaches. How powerful equipments belonging to security officials such as Special Detachment (88) are, they can only touch its influences rather than its roots,” he told NU Online here on Wednesday (12/8).<>
Masdar was of the opinion that extremism had constantly threatened the Indonesian national platform, namely Pancasila which he considered as such a Madinah Charter for Indonesia.
“The root of terrorism we have recently faced is extreme scripturalist Islamic ideology which always claims to hold the Qur’an and the hadist but is only on its alphabetic aspects,” he said.
According to Masdar, it’s necessary to have a ‘counter ideology’ from Islamic viewpoints capable of appreciating exoteric dimension of the qur’anic and Hadits texts and typically Indonesian local cultural values.
Masdar also said that NU could represent a typical Indonesian moderate Islam being able to face scripturalist and radical Islamic ideology, adding that the involvement of NU figures in the political arena could weaken the NU role in dealing with the moderate Islam. (nam)
