The history witnesses that since its birth Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has always placed itself as such a people power of anti-imperialism or colonialism. The historical fact also reveals that fight against colonizers has so far been moved by ulema/kyais and santris of the the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization, regarding pesantren as a fortress.

Director of the Recognition and Mentoring Program of Agricultural Institute of Bogor Dr Aji Hermawan made the statement at a discussion, welcoming the new year 2008 and 1 Muhamrram 1429 H at the complex of Islamic Center Al-Ghazaly Foundation, Kotaparis, Kota Bogor, West Java on Monday (31/12).<>

As reported by the NU Online's Mohammad Fahir, at the discussion held by the Nahdlatul Ulama Students Family (KMNU) of the IPB's postgraduate program, Aji said NU had conducted such epistemological khittah.

According to Aji, the 1926 khittah initiated by the Nahdliyin-based organization was a brilliant and strategic measure.

"We have so far claimed as majority. If we want to claim majority, we should also admit that the majority of poor people is Nahdliyin (NU followers). We are majority, the powerless majority, however," the former chairman of the UK Nahdlatul Ulama Special Branch Board said.

The IPB's human resources expert explained, in accordance with its nature, NU should constantly support independence in wide range of sectors. He was of view that the epistemological khittah was a must and had more meaningfulness than what he called as political khittah.

"So far we have most of the time campaigned the khittah, but it has remained a merely political khittah. The most fundamental is the epistemological one," he said.

Aji convincingly admitted if the epistemological khittah could be realized the Nahdliyin would be able to take a stand against difficulties in all sectors.

"It is one of the most important duties for NU intellectuals if they want NU to lead in the field of thought, place NU in the most respected position, and contribute to people, nation and state," he added. (rif)
