The Honorary Council of the House of Representatives is scheduled to cross-examine former fisheries and maritime affairs minister Rokhmin Dahuri and two other suspects in connection with the flow of troubled funds from the fisheries ministry to the House.

Deputy chairman of the Honorary Council, Gayus Lumbuun, said Tuesday that Rokhmin and the two suspects would testify before the council on Thursday to further identify the recipients of the ministry funds totaling Rp 4.2 billion (US$503,000).<>

"The Honorary Council has no intention to try the former minister, we just want to seek the truth on the troubled funds' flow to factions or legislators at the House," he was quoted by The Jakarta Post as saying.

He said the council would also grill five legislators believed to have received the illegitimate funds, though declined to identify the individuals.

Rokhmin is currently facing the Anti-Corruption Court under charges of illegally collecting and using Rp 11.5 billion in state funds.

The former minister recently testified that a slice of the fisheries ministry funds had been distributed to factions and legislators at the House as well as to candidates contending the 2004 presidential election.

Former National Mandate Party chairman and speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly, Amien Rais, recently admitted openly to receiving Rp 400 million from Rokhmin to finance his presidential campaign.

Gayus also said he has received reliable information that considerable sums of cash were channeled to the House from the fisheries ministry as recently as last month, despite the case being public knowledge.

The Honorary Council also plans to summon current fisheries minister Freddy Numbery, who has reportedly channeled Rp 2.1 billion to the House.

"Reliable sources have informed me of 30 flows of troubled funds to the House, but we are still calculating the total amount of the funds," Gayus said.

He warned that any factions or legislators found guilty of receiving the illegal funds would be sanctioned in accordance with the law. (dar)
