Leader of the Jombang’s Tebuireng Islamic boarding school (pesantren) KH Sholahuddin Wahid (Gus Sholah) expected Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) to remain being a civil power being able to control the performance of government. For that reason, he would reject any intervention within the Nahdliyin-based organization.

Gus Sholah said if the independence of NU board member faded, the NU credibility would also come to an end. Whereas, he said, the credibility should be defended by the Indonesian largest Muslim organization anytime and anywhere. One of the factors being capable of damaging the independence of NU board members was what so-called riswah (bribery).<>

Gus Sholah expressed his deeply concern over possible riswah given by certain parties to support one of figures nominated as general chairman candidate of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) in the much-awaited NU 32nd Congress in January next year.

“In this case, I have no the courage to make sure the truth of the report. Certainly, if it is true we must reject it,” Gus Sholah was quoted by beritajatim.com as saying.

Gus Sholah also expected all NU cadres to be ready as candidates if supported by branch boards including himself to be one of the candidates if securing adequate support from branch boards in the Makassar Congress ahead.

“If the support amounts to 90 branches, I will automatically be ready to run the congress next year,” he said. (min)
