Beijing chided Washington on Monday (14/1) for allowing Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian to make a travel stopover in the United States, calling him a “destroyer of peace”.
“Chen Shui-bian is a destroyer of peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits and a troublemaker in Sino-US relations,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a statement on the ministry’s website.<>
“We demand the US not allow Chen Shui-bian to carry out splittist activities aimed at Taiwan independence in any manner on US territory and stop sending the wrong signal to the Taiwan independence forces.”
She reiterated China’s “resolute” opposition to other countries having any official contact with officials from Taiwan, which China regards as a rebel province.
AFP reported, the democratically elected Chen transited Alaska on Sunday on his way to Taiwan ally Guatamala, on a trip that came after his independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party suffered a huge defeat in Saturday’s legislative elections.
China has threatened to use force to retake the island if it ever formally declares independence. (dar)
