The grandson of the Iran's Islamic Revolution leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Sayyed Yaser Khomenei, expressed his great appreciation over the important role of NU in spreading Islamic teachings in Indonesia. As for him, if compared with other countries, the role of Islamic organizations like NU was more effective to uphold Islam.

"If the people are helped by Islamic organizations, they would be more effective in both spreading and upholding Islam," said Yasser as meeting with general chairman of the Indonesia's biggest Muslim
organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH Hasyim Muzadi at the NU headquarters in Jakarta on Friday (6/2).<>

He said the state should not impose religious beliefs on its people, adding that all this should be handled by Muslim organizations like NU.

"If the people become religious, the government or the state would follow and kindly implement (the religious beliefs)," he said.

In the meantime, Yaser also said that if the people were not religious, there would be such a possibility of the state to impose religion on its people.

In this respect, Yaser told a story in dealing with the experience of his country as led by Imam Khomeini that was considered as a reference of Muslims in Iran.

"Because of becoming a reference of Muslims in Iran, he (Imam Khomeini) could move Muslims in Iran," he said.

For that reason, he added, the existence of Islamic organizations like NU, their roles were more important than any other organization whose relationship with government. The role of NU would be greater in disseminating Islam in society, he said..

During his short visit, Yaser was accompanied by Iran's ambassador to Indonesia Behrooz Kamalvandi. (rif)
