Vice President Boediono warned here Saturday that unprofessional journalists could damage the system of  government. Therefore , the integrity and professionalism of media workers were an urgent thing for Indonesia, he told reporters who routinely cover his daily activities as vice president.

The press as the fourth estate of democracy was so influential  that its role in developing  sound economic and democratic systems was quite significant, he said. />
"Information should have values and contain truths. I believe that the function (of disseminating credible information) should be  an inherent part of  every journalist’s behavior," he said.

Vice President Boediono said disseminating credible information   should not be forgotten because any incorrect or misleading information could potentially damage the whole system.

In this context,  journalists needed to work professionally and maintain their integrity because news was not a "transactional thing", he said. Credibility, he further said, was an extraordinary asset for media and media workers.

"Credibility is so important that it must be maintained," he said.

A day before meeting with tens of journalists routinely covering his daily activities, Vice President Boediono also talked about the government’s stance on press freedom.

While speaking at the 16th anniversary of the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) in Jakarta on Friday, Boediono said the government had never had the intention to weaken press freedom. Instead he welcomed the mass media, which could strictly control the government.

"Please strictly control the government but please also give the government enough room and opportunities  to do its best," he said.

Boediono said the government was like AJI. Both were  supporters of democracy with press freedom as one its icons.

"We are not going to hurt the democracy that we all have built," Boediono said.

In the past, rulers considered  democracy and press freedom challenges but now democracy had  grown up and media workers and media institutions  valued their freedom.

"Media people and other components of our nation can criticize the government through the media," he said.

Boediono said he believed that democracy and effective governance could support one another though it was not easy to unite them. (dar)
