Padang, NU Online
School activity in Padang, the provincial capital of West Sumatra, has already begun, 11 days after the magnitude 7.9 quake hit the region.

"Normal school activity has been restored 40 percent, carried out on a double-shift basis in schools considered safe. Students are not requested to study hard as their psychological conditions have yet to recover fully," head of the city`s education service, Nur Amin, said here on Saturday.<>

The quake that happened at 5.18pm on September 30 had so far killed more than 800 people and damaged more than 900 school buildings.

Nur Amin said students did not study full time as school hours had been set only from 8 am to 11 am for the first shift and from 1pm to 3pm for the second shift.

"The education service had set the schedule like that because many students are still traumatized. We are glad they are willing to return to school ," he said as quted by Antara news agency, adding that most of them were still accompanied by their parents.

Nur Amin said healing their psychological trauma could take a long time because they had lost family members or houses.

To deal with the shortage of rooms the education service had introduced a double-shift system with some studying in the morning hours and others in the afternoon, he said. (dar)
