Indonesia has called on Myanmar's ruling junta to refrain from force in dealing with the nation's largest protest rallies in decades.
"Indonesia urges Myanmar not to resort to coercive measures in handling the peaceful rallies. If they go that way, it is negative for the Myanmarese people as well as for ASEAN," Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda said late Tuesday.<>
Hassan said the foreign ministers of the Association Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Thursday would table a debate on Myanmar.
The military junta has dispatched military squads to curb the rallies. Reuters reported that troops fired shots over the heads of a large crowd in central Yangoon on Wednesday, killing one person, injuring several others and sending people scurrying for cover.
Hassan said these latest development proved Myanmar's so-called road map to democracy was at a standstill despite the junta's repeated promises of progress.
Hassan said it was premature to discuss the deployment of peace-keepers to Myanmar, but said taking the junta to the UN Human Rights Council would be a good move. (tjp/dar)
