NU must be able to bridge various civilizations

As the world's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) should be capable of bridging various civilizations and cultures from various long-standing faiths, ethnics and traditions in the archipelagic country.
General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) made the remarks at a religious gathering to commemorate the NU 85th anniversary in Simpangampek district Pasaman Barat regency, West Sumatera on Monday.

Present at the occasion were chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Regional Board (PWNU) of West Sumatera A. Khusnun Aziz, Regional Secretary of Pasaman Barat Hermanto, leaders of sufi orders and Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and some 500 NU followers (Nahdliyin).
Said said that all differences of the various faiths, ethnics, and cultures ane even local traditions should not be confronted one another. Instead, there should be possible dialogues aimed at promoting mutual understanding and respect.
"NU will (continuously) take a stand against any existing radicalization within society," Said said.
NU Online's Bagindo Armaidi Tanjung reported that Said was deeply concerned about various emerging radical acts in society, saying that the radical acts could destroy the state facilities.
"There is no violence in religions and there are no religions both teaching and propagating violence."
In the meantime, Said also called for the importance of NU to stay committed to defending the Unitary State of Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), state "Pancasila" ideology and the 1945 Constitution. (bat)
