KH Hasyim Muzadi, chairman of the country’s largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), said he was hoping the presence of an Israeli delegation at an Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting in Bali later this month will not trigger conflicts in the country.

"Indonesia is not responsible for the presence of the Israeli  delegation because it was not Indonesia that has invited them but  the IPU," the NU chairman said.<>

He expressed hope the presence of the Israeli delegation in Bali would not cause trouble at home because it was not Indonesia’s  responsibility.

As reported by the state news agency, the IPU is planning to hold its 166th meeting, in  Bali next April 29 - May 4 with legations from 148 countries expected to attend.

Muzadi said he was concerned the presence of the Israeli delegation would trigger conflicts, demonstrations and security disturbances at home that could mar  Indonesia’s image  on the world.

He also said the Israeli presence could provoke terrorists to act, capitalizing on the situation at the IPU meeting.

"Although Indonesia did not invite them, any disturbance at home would affect the country’s image,"  he added.

A legislator earlier expressed opposition to the possible participation of an Israeli delegation in the event.

The Indonesian government, the House of Representatives (DPR) and the people must reject the presence of the Israeli delegation at the IPU meeting, Al Muzzanmil Yusus, vice chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR)’s  Commission III,  said on Wednesday.

He said the presence of an Israeli delegation in Bali should be rejected because Israel was still detaining a number of Palestinian officials and the leader of the Palestinian parliament.

Earlier, the chairman of the House of Representatives’ Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Board (BKSAP),  Abdillah Toha, had said it was uncertain whether the Israeli delegation would attend the IPU meeting in Bali next week or not. (dar)
