All NU health service programs undertaken by the NU Health Care Institution (LPKNU) have expectedly been focused more on Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) as NU cultural basis.

Chairman of the LPKNU Dr Syahrizal Syarif made the remarks as opening a roundtable discussion taking up issues on HIV/AIDS, held in Jakarta on Thursday.<>

The pesantren-based programs having so far been conducted were mitigating drug abuse in collaboration with the Colombo Plan, program on community-based disaster risk management in collaboration with AusAid and program in dealing with disaster refugees in collaboration with UNOCHA.

LPKNU has now taken part actively in mitigating HIV/AIDS in which its spread has increasingly been on such a scale.

"We hope the role of NU in mitigating HIV/AIDS as its successful in campaigning the planned family program which has formerly ever been protested by some people," he said.

As for Syahrizal, there were four aspects dealing with the mitigation of HIV/AIDS, namely involving NU in education, making policies and legislation endorsing efforts of preventing HIV/AIDS, providing health services, HIV/AIDS test, and counseling.

In addition, he said, the mitigation was also in need of the involvement of all NU elements and propagating moral and religious values as part of dealing with the deadly desease. (mkf)
