The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) has commented on an edict banning the use of facebook, friendster and other online social-networking websites as well as mobile phone communications “if they were used for extramarital affairs” and other “negative” things such as pornography.
According to the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization, the status of using facebook might be forbidden (haram) if it is misused for negative purposes.<>
As for NU, facebook was, once again, like other kinds of technology, saying it was merely a tool. It could be forbidded if misused. On the contrary, it could be permissible if used for useful and good purposes.
"In (the perspective of) religion, the tool is neutral. That means, it depends on how the tool is used," general chairman of PBNU KH Hasyim Muzadi told NU Online recently.
Hasyim who is also the leader of the Malang's Al Hikam Islamic boarding school (Pesantren) analogized facebook to a kitchen knife. If it was used for cooking, he said, the kitchen knife would bring benefit for those using it. On the contrary, if it was used to kill, the knife would be a problem.
"If the knife is used for cooking what is the matter. On the contrary, if it is used to kill, it will be an evidence (for being used for criminal acts)," Hasyim said.
Hasyim was of view the law of using facebook was the same as that of using other tools such as cell phone. If they were used for good purposes, the communication tools would bring much benefit.
"So, it depends on how they are used. The most important is what are they used for?," Hasyim said, adding the law of whether the tool is haram (forbidden) or halal (permissible) was not, again and again, based on the tool itself, but how and for what it is used.
As reported that the edict recently issued by FMPP (women pesantren deliberation forum) at Pesantren Hidayatul Mubtadi'in, Kediri, East Java, decided that facebooking is forbidden for always being used "for extramarital affairs” and other “negative” things such as pornography.
While, on the heels of reports of the controversial edict, an official said the government would not issue any laws to limit individual freedom to access information through the two media.
An expert staff member at the Information and Communications Ministry, Sukemi, cited Law No.11/2008 on Information and Electronic Transaction, which bans the distribution of information that tends to violate morality in the community, including invitations to gamble, insinuation, extortion and threats.
“Under the law, any internet providers who distribute pornography can be arrested by the police and be legally processed,” he said. (rif)
