Secretary-General of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought Iran Ayatullah Muhamamad Ali Tashkiri expressed his gratitude to the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) for hosting the World Muslim Brotherhood Conference.

Ayatullah said that the Nahdliyin-based organization had been considered successful in initiating dialogues among  world Islamic groups.<>

"Thank you so much especially for Syeikh Hasyim Muzadi, general chairman of NU which is the world's biggest Muslim organization. NU has successfully developed dialogues among Muslim groups," Tashkiri said at the opening of the conference in Jakarta on Saturday.

He said that in Islam there had been various groups, sects and schools of thought. But Islam, he added, was religion calling for the importance of dialogue.

"The difference among Muslims is very large. Islam really gives freedom in ijtihad. That's why I believe that Islam calls for scientific dialogues. The Qur'an itself is a book of dialogue," he said.

Ayatullah said that one of Muslim figures respected by a Muslim group, Shi'ite, At-Thusi even wrote a special book containing different views among Muslims.

He hoped the conference would in turn give ideas to unify various Muslim groups around the world. The unity, he said, would lead Muslims to their shared interest.

"The duty of ulema (Muslim scholars) is delivering such teachings as unity and solidarity. The solidarity will make Muslims successful in achieving shared interest," he said. (nam)
