On its congress that will be held in Makassar, South Sulawesi in January 2010 ahead, the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) will take up issues, among others, on the importance of interpreting the Khittah (organizational principles).

General chiarman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi said that the much-awaited congress would consider the importance of producing a single interpretation in regard with the basic principles of the organization.<>

"The Khittah is already very appropriate, it can no longer be criticized. But there must be a single interpretation about the Khittah," Hasyim told reporters here Monday (11/5).

Hasyim was of the view the problem which has recently emerged was the various interpretations about the Khittah especially in terms of the relationship between NU and practical politics.

"All people have their own interpretation. As a result, in certain circumstances, it is some of the time rather unclear between the area of practical politics and that of non-practical politics," Hasyim said.

Hasyim said that NU was organizationally not forbidden from involving itself in practical politics. But in fact, he said, there had been many NU elites involving NU in the area because the elites had their own interpretation about the Khittah.

In addition, Hasyim said, there had also been many other parties form outside  NU deliberately making use of  the Nahdliyin-based organization solely for their group interests.

"Usually, they voice concerns about the NU Khittah as if they warn NU not to involve in politics. But obviously they are making use of NU," the leader of the Malang's Al Hikam Islamic boarding school (pesantren) said. (dar)
