Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) H Arvin Hakim said here on Monday that NU had nothing to do with a press conference held by the Clean Indonesia Movement at the PBNU headquarters on Sunday.

"People or whoever he or she may be should understand that any activity at the PBNU headquarters has not always been held by NU figures or PBNU," Arvin said, adding that "PBNU knew nothing about the Clean Indonesia Movement which held a press conference at the PBNU headquarters" yesterday.<>

Concerning the relationship between NU and the government, Arvin asserted that PBNU along with its all chapters in regional and regency levels was, again and again, not part of the government and not an opposition.

"NU has its own mechanism on how to deal with the government," Arvin said.

Arvin said that NU "has its own mechanism on how to criticize the government", adding that the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization "is not an opposition and could be cooptated"

The former chairman of Ansor Youth Movement reiterated that NU would not engage in any practical politics. Rather, he said, NU would focus more on such issues as social, education, economy, culture and religion as mandated by what so-called as the Khittah NU. (hmz)
