Naqsabandiyah followers in W. Sumatra celebrate Idul Adha Thursday

Around 3,000 Muslims following the Naqsabandiyah teaching in quake-devastated West Sumatra celebrated their Idul Adha on Thursday, one day before their other fellow Muslims would celebrate it on Friday.
Dozens of Naqsabandiyah followers at Cupak Tangah village at Pauh district in the provincial capital city of Padang conducted their Idul Adha prayer at their small praying house in the morning, and then they proceeded with the slaughtering of three goats as their sacrifice.<>
"Last year, we had seven goats as sacrifices. This time, we have only three goats as most people here would choose to use their money to renovate their destroyed houses," Syah Badar from Baru village said.
In Padang alone, there are around 50 mosques belonging to Naqsabandiyah with around 1,500 followers. In addition, there are another 1,500 Naqsabandiyah followers in other regencies in West Sumatra.
Naqsabandiyah teaching was brought to West Sumatra by Syech M. Thaib in 1806 who established the province's first Naqsabandiyah mosque at Piai village, Pauh district.
Naqsabandiyah followers usually celebrate their Idul Fitri and Idul Adha holidays one day ahead of the official calendar. (jp/dar)
