The Malaysian government, in this case Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Baidawi, has offered an official apology to Indonesia for the incident in which several Malaysian policemen had beaten up Indonesian karate referee Donald Luther Colopita.
"Last night (Aug 29) at about 8 p.m Central Indonesia Time (WITA) President Yudhoyono received a telephone call from the Malaysian premier expressing profound regrets and offering an apology for the incident," presidential spokesman Dino Pati Djalal said at the Tampak Siring Palace in Bali Thursday night.<>
The manhandling of the Indonesian karateka referee took place on Friday (Aug 24) when Donald was beaten up and kicked by four Malaysian police officers without any clear reasons.
Dino said that the phone conversation between the two heads of state has been constructive and friendly like between two brokers, which the Malaysian premier saying that such incident should not have happened.
According to Dino, President Yudhoyono appreciated the statment of the Malaysian leader who with goodwill tried to contact the Indonesian head of state.
Antara reported, the phone call was also a reflection of a wise atttitude of the Malaysian premier, and the two leaders agreed that the incident needs to be settled by the law, he said.
He also disclosed that the Malaysian Chief of Police has sent Donald Luther Colopita a letter which the Malaysian ambassador to Indonesia himself has handed it to the victim now lying in bed at a hospital in Jakarta. (dar)
