The strict separation on functions between the advisory board (Syuriyah) and the executive board (Tanfidziyah) in the structure of NU should soon be dealt with because there have so far been overlapping tasks between NU board members.

Dr Abdurrahmin Syarkun of the Nahdlatul Ulama Special Branch Board (PCINU) of Malaysia made the remarks on the sidelines of a NU international conference in Bogor over the weekend.<>

"We propose a strictly separation in regard with tasks between syuriyah and tanfidziyah as that happened during the KH Hasyim Asy'ari's time in which Hasan Gipo was appointed as chairman of the executive board (tanfidziyah)," he said.

Those who will be the tanfidziyah members should be the men capable of implementing any policies and programs from the syuriyah, consisting of religious figures who know more about fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and syaria (Islamic law).

"Let syuriyah members take up issues dealing with Ahmadiyah or Hizbut Tahrir," Syarkun said, adding that various developments on any discourse during the KH Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid's era should always be kept up with.

In addition, Syarkun expected such developments to importantly be taken into accout as real actions by those willing to give their best service to NU.

In the meantime, he also expected NU cadres who are now pursuing carrier in other countries to help develop NU.

Syarkun said that some crucial matters that should immediately be focused by NU in the future were economy and education, saying that the crucial matters had now remained stagnant. (mkf)
