Pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) should always be supported to make progress and development because the traditional educational institutions have become centers for producing Muslim cadres in Indonesia.

Though pesantren have called no more attention from government, the government should pay more its attention the existence of the educational institutions. As a result the Indonesia's oldest institutions will be able to address any emerging obstacle and keep up with any developments.<>

Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siradj, popularly known as Kang Said, made the remarks at Makassar's An-Nahdlah Islamic boarding school on Saturday.

"The task of Nahdlatul Ulama is maximize the pesantren potentials especially in the process of transforming knowledge. While at the same time, the government should ensure any required educational facility can no longer be addressed by the pesantren themselves," he said in the KH Harisah-led pesantren.

Before some 800 santri (students), the cleric earning his PhD from the Ummul Qura University, Mecca, asserted that the challenges facing NU cadres in the future would not merely be such religious concepts as akidah (creed), Islamic jurisprudence, or tasawuf (sufism). Instead, he said, the most important thing was how the NU cadres actualize themselves in regard with the concepts.

Kang Said that that In regard with the concepts NU could be considered as the owner, "the problem is our capability in realizing the emerging concepts." (nam)
