Jakarta police ban parades on end of fasting month

Jakarta Metropolitan Police ban car parades in the capital for the celebration of the end of the fasting month of Ramadhan later this week.
"A harsh action will be taken against motorists who violate the regulation," the director of traffic, Senior Commissioner Condro Kirono said here on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.<<>;br />
To celebrate the end of Ramadhan, people used to go out in cars or motorcycles and often conduct a parade around the city.
He said the police would also act against motor bikers who did not wear standard helmets.
He said the police made the decision with regard to avoiding traffic jams and to anticipating traffic accidents.
He said the Jakarta Metropolitan Police had ordered all resort police chiefs to help inform the public about it.
The Jakarta administration and the police have made plans to assure security on the eve of Idul Fitri.
The Jakarta administration has also asked the police to be aware of the people from outside the capital who would come and conduct a parade in the city.
This year`s Idul Fitri is expected to fall on Friday but confirmation about the date still has yet to be made on Wednesday. (dar)
