ITS: Wrong procedure causes Lapindo mudflow

Surabaya, NU Online
Professor Perry Burhan of the chemical department, the Surabaya Institute of Technology (ITS), blamed incorrect procedure for the mudflow in the exploration area of Lapindo Brantas Inc.

"Lapindo did the right thing in its exploratory operations,  because oil reserves are present under the earth’s surface," the former member of the ITS mudflow handling team said in Surabaya on Tuesday.<>

And he added that actually Lapindo already knew about the presence of bubble cavities in the earth which would burst and overflow if drilling is carried out right on top of them.

"But the problem is that Lapindo did not know the exact locations of the cavities, and should have been very careful in its drilling operations, especially in view of the recent Yogyakarta earthquake," he said.

According to the professor of organic geo-chemicals, the mudflow was most likely triggered by friction of the earth layers caused by the Yogyakarta quake.

"But Lapindo chose the wrong procedure and carried out drillings without a casing, and such operation under these circumstances is very risky," he said.

He assured that if Lapindo had used a casing in its drilling operations, the hot mudflow would not have happened.

Geologically, he said, Lapindo did not make any mistake in its explorations, but technically Lapindo had chosen the wrong procedure, as it already knew about the presence of the cavities in the area.

In the meantime, Head of the Disaster Study Center of ITS Dr Amin Widodo said that many foreign researchers including those from the UK and Norway believed that hot mudflow in Porong was the result of drilling operations right on top of the cavities, which caused them to blow up and overflowed.

"The cavities would automatically overflow during friction and pressure, but it is questionable where the phenomenon was triggered by the Yoyakarta quake on May 27, 2006, since the tremor was very far apart from the Lapindo mudflow on May 29, 2006", he was quoted by the state news agency as saying.

East Java police has prepared seven reports on 13 suspects, including Imam P Agustino (GM Lapindo), Yenny Nawawi (president of  PT Medici), and Nur Rohmat Sawulo (Vice President, Drilling Service of PT Energi. (dar) Mega Persada). (dar)
