The decision about the first day of the holy fasting month was made at a meeting chaired by Religious Minister Suryadharma Ali.
The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI), various Islamic groups, including Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, and foreign embassies.
"After considering the reports of Hisab-Rukyah Division and the ulemas` insightful opinions, we have agreed that the first day of Ramadan 1431 Hijriah falls on Wednesday, August 11, 2010," he said.
Indonesia`s two largest Islamic organizations, NU and Muhammadiyah, had also shared the same date as that of the government despite different methods for calculating the start of Ramadan.
If Muhammadiyah depends on astronomical calculations, NU refers to the sighting of the new moon called rukyah.
In connection with this holy month, Muhammadiyah Chairman Din Syamsuddin called on all Muslims to adopt a healthy and economical life style to have a better life during Ramadan.
"Entering this Ramadan, we urge our brothers and sisters in Islam to practice a healthy and economical life style because it is also suggested in the Islamic teachings," he said.
Secretary of the Muhammadiyah-East Java Chapter, Nadjib Hamid, had recently also urged
the entire Indonesian Muslims to seek for the goodness of Ramadan happily and make it be a momentum for strengthening the familial ties and brotherhood of all mankind.
The Ramadan was also a momentum of introspection for Muslims and seeking for almighty God`s mercy and forgiveness.
"Let us get rid ourselves from any wrongdoing and work hard for goodness," he said, adding that Ramadan was a sacred month in which Muslims would be bestowed with folds of goodness.
In the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is the ninth month. During the sacred month, fasting Muslims are not allowed to eat, drink, have sex with married spouses, and do any other forbidden activity from dawn until sunset. (dar)
