The government needs to focus on two things prior to the Muslim holiday of Idul Fitri, the House Speaker said.

Marzuki Alie called for the government to focus firstly on the price of staple food and secondly on the transportation infrastructure in time for Mudik, the annual exodus.

He said the price of almost all basic necessities, especially rice, in Indonesia had increased,

“It is better for the government to focus on maintaining enough food stock with affordable prices,” he was quoted by the Jakarta Globe as saying

In terms of transportation, the House wanted the government to make sure that land, water, and air transport was handled appropriately.

Marzuki asked officials at the Transportation Ministry and the National Police to minimize the number of traffic accidents that occurred during Mudik.

“Last year there were 613 accidents which claimed 123 lives. One hundred and sixty five people were badly injured and 325 with light injuries,” he said.

The House also supported the government’s efforts to provide free public transportation for exodus travelers.

“It could lessen the number of accidents,” Marzuki said. (dar)
