Hermeneutics not compatible to interpret the Qur’an

Hermeneutics as a method of interpretation has widely and intensively been studied and promoted by Muslim intellectuals in the country, including by the Liberal Islamic Network (JIL), Paramadina and so on.
On account of giving understanding about actual issues based on Islamic jurisprudence, the Organization of Lirboyo Alumni (Himasal) of Brebes held a problem deliberation to discuss hermeneutics at Hidayatul Mubtadi’ien Islamic boarding school (pesantren) that is located in Dumeling village, Wanasari, Brebes over the weekend. />
Organizing committee choef Abdul Aziz Aim said that it was held periodically, especially to take up contemporary issues in accordance with Islamic jurisprudence.
The problem deliberation was attended by hundreds of Lirboyo Alumni and took the theme the paradigm of hermeneutics in the perspective of liberal Islamic jurisprudence.
”The meeting is the second which was formerly held at Anidhom Nurul Huda Islamic boarding school, Gamprit, Brebes with a different theme,” Aziz said.
Ahmad Sururi being one of speakers at the meeting was of view that hermeneutics was again and again not in line with long-standing traditions maintained and preserved by pesantren, namely Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir) and interpretation (takwil).
“Whereas, hermeneutics is not appropriate to be applied to understand the true meaning of the Qur’an, instead of deputizing the position of qur’anic science so-called as tafsir which has long rooted in Islamic studies,” Sururi added.
Meanwhile chairman of Himasal Mulyani said that the Qur’an was final in nature, adding it would never change and “trend among modernist Islamic circles, especially in Indonesia that have adopted hermeneutics as an alternative method of interpreting the Qur’an is absurd.”
Mulyani said that their criticism and threats posed against the Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir) had proved their incapability in grasping the concept of tafsir and understanding religious grounds within the Islamic intellectual tradition. (was)
