Gus Sholah wants NU to be leading actor of civil society

Candidate of general chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Sholahuddin Wahid (Gus Sholah) wanted NU not to involve itself in any practical politics and called on NU to be leading actor in empowering civil society as conducted by KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) IN 1990s.
"The practical politics should be avoided for the position of NU is beyond political parties. NU should be the main element of civil society as that was in 1990s," said Gus Sholah at a discussion here on Wednesday.<>
The 2010 NU congress ahead, he said, would be a key factor for the change of direction of the religious social organization.
He considered NU in some phases; the first is the birth of NU in 1926, the NU struggle for the nation's independence in 1945, NU became a political party in 1952, NU joined the United Development Party (PPP) in 1973, NU accepted Pancasila and the Khittah in 1984, NU became a leader of civil society in 1990s, and the 1998 reform by founding the National Awakening Party (PKB).
Following the reform era, there was a strong conviction that NU should involve itself in the practical politics. Moreover, after KH Abdurrahman Wahid Gus Dur) came to power. But through its joerney there were many failures met by NU so that the politics that has to be played by NU in the future is the politics of nationhood.
Asked about those willing to involve themselves in the practical politics, Gus Sholah explained such conditions as if there were NU chairmen involving in the political arena, they should withdraw themselves from NU as conducted by KH Hasyim Muzadi in the 2004 presidential elections and not using the NU institution for their political interests.
That did not mean, he said, that NU figures are forbidden to involve themselves in any practical politics because each individual has the same right as citizen of Indonesia.
"I support NU individuals to run if they have potential, but they should know the rules and be smart,' he said. (min)
