General Chairman of the National Awakening Party’s (PKB) Advisory Board KH Abdurahman Wahid (Gus Dur) said his party wanted to uphold ’syariah’ law.
"But, the syariah law to be implemented is without naming Indonesia as the Islamic country. So far I always perform Friday prayers and fast during the fasting month of Ramadhan not because the law," he told thousands of PKB members in Surabaya, East Java, on Sunday (24/2).<>
He made the remark when declaring himself as presidential nominee and declaring Dr H Achmady SH MM as East Java gubernatorial candidate in East Java and installing the East Java chapter’s executives board of PKB under the leadership of Fuad Amin Imron and H. Hasan Aminuddin.
Abdurahman Wahid, former President, said that according to fundamentalists the enforcement of syariah law without mentioning Indonesia as an Islamic country was a violation of Islam. They themselves failed to understand the adminstrative procedures.
"Our country does not belong to an individual, but to everybody. Hence, NU since its congress in Banjarmasin in 1935 had said that establishing an Islamic state was not compulsory," he said.
According to the former General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), it didn’t mean that Nahdlatul Ulema (NU) members did not understand Islam. They knew that Moslems have two tasks - upholding syariah law and as being a good caliph.
"For PKB, Islamic law (syariah) should be upheld as a Moslem and a caliph, as PKB was fighting for the welfare of people as principle of the syariah," he was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
Therefore, he said that PKB had to support a free economic market and provide low interest credits to the people.
"Our government had been cheated by other countries who asked Indonesia to sell commodities at low prices. In the meantime, our country is required to buy their commodities at high prices by means of receiving such loans from them. Especially now that our debt has reached US$1.350 trillion," he said.
