The government here on Tuesday decided to declare September 13 the beginning of the Islamic fasting month in the country.

The religious affairs ministry held a meeting to declare the start of the fasting month on Tuesday which was directly led by the religious affairs minister and attended by information minister Muhammad Nuh and leaders of Islamic organizations.

The secretary of the Muhammadiyah organization, Goodwill Zubair, said he was happy with the meeting and that all sides finally were united in determining the start of the fasting month.

Ahmad Ghozali Masruri from the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) said his side had failed to sight the moon so that it decided Thursday September 13 would be the beginning of the fasting month.

"Our team did not sight a moon tonight so the decision was referred to the government," he was quoted by the state news agency as saying. (rif)
