The ideas propagated by the Liberal Islam Network (JIL) have no strong arguments. Instead, its ideas have mostly been from quotes and ideas from anywhere, and are considerably not more than crude ideas.
The statements were excerpts from a press release issued by the Young Cleric Forum of East Java following its dialogue with JIL at Bumi Sholawat Islamic boarding school (Pesantren) Tulangan Sidoarjo on Sunday (11/10).<>
"Mr Ulil Abshar Abdalla along with his JIL did not have systematic theoretical foundations and strong arguments. Their thoughts have mostly been from quotes and ideas from anywhere, and seemed plagiaristic, which depend on season and time (zhuruf), and the sponsor messages which are not rooted in the people tradition of thinking of the nation."
The press release said that the ideas of JIL were aimed to dismantle the establishment of religious values as well as the tradition of Nahdliyin. To meet this aim, JIL has taken at least three ways, namely liberalization in the field of aqidah, liberalization in the field of understanding the Qur'an, and liberalization in the field of Shari'a and Akhlaq (morality).
In addition, JIL also tended to put aside the earlier (salaf) ulema authority and sew the seeds of distrust of them, while at the same time they did admire Western Orientalists and their disciples such as as Huston Smith, John Shelby Spong, Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid, and so on.
But the forum warned about the importance of facing JIL (thoughts) through strategic and tactical approaches and sermons instead of by committing acts of violence. (Nam)
