The Dutch government must apologize to the Indonesian government and people for having colonized Indonesia in the past, coordinator of the National People`s Coalition , Jumhur Hidayat, said.

"The apology must be made in public to the people of Indonesia because they colonized us for hundreds of years and they must also recognize our independence proclaimed on August 17, 1945," he said at the "Indonesia Menggugat" (Indonesia Demands) Building here on Thursday.r />
The building was a symbol of the Indonesian people`s fight against Dutch colonialism as it was the place where Soekarno (Indonesia`s first president and independence proclaimer) was tried by the Dutch for fighting their colonial system, he said.

Jumhur made the statement in the presence of representatives of various elements of West Java society at an event to show support for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono`s recent decision to cancel his planned visit to the Netherlands. It was themed "West Java People Support President SBY (Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono) in Upholding the Nation`s Dignity."

In a written statement read out at the gathering, they also called on SBY to review the country`s relations with the Netherlands to preserve the country`s national dignity.

"The Dutch must never forget the history of the Indonesian people`s struggle and their declaration of independence on August 17, 1945 and must see how many sacrifices they have made to become an independent nation," he said in his fiery speech drawing applauses from the audience.

The Dutch government still considers 1949 as the year of Indonesia`s independence. He said the Dutch must even pay all the losses the Indonesian people had suffered under their colonial rule.

"If they do not, the Dutch government will never gain the respect of the Indonesian people," he said.

Jumhur who is also chairman of the Federation of Free Indonesian Workers Unions said "President Yudhoyono`s decision has to be supported by all parties and be taken as an example for all officials and activists in the community sector for the Indonesian dignity before other countries."

Jumhur is also head of the National Manpower Placement and Protection Agency (BNP2TKI).

Among those attending the event were the chairman of the West Java Community Brotherhood , KH MS Hamdan, the chairman of the Bandung Activists Radar Tribaskoro, Otong Wiranatakusumah, youth and worker representatives. (ant/dar)
