Three similar bombs discovered almost simultaneously in three different places in Jakarta were distributed by existing terrorist groups to signal that they still existed despite the trial of firebrand cleric Abu Bakar Ba’asyir, an analyst said on Wednesday.
“Existing terrorist groups have primary targets. On the list are liberal Islam activists, Christian activists and Jews. The three bombs targeted figures representing each of those groups,” said Mardigu Wowiek Prasantyo, a terrorism analyst from the University of Indonesia.

The first bomb was addressed to Ulil Abshar Abhalla, a prominent Liberal Islam Network (JIL) activist.
The second targeted the National Narcotics Agency's (BNN) day-to-day chairman, Gories Mere. “Gories is an influential Christian activist. Rumor has it that the Detachment 88 Anti-terror squad was also funded by the BNN,” Mardigu was quoted by The Jakarta Post as saying.
The third targeted the chairman of the Pancasila Youth organization, Yapto Soerjosoemarno, who is of Jewish-decent.
All three bombs were discovered on Tuesday. Only the first bomb exploded, injuring three people, when a policeman tried to defuse it using water; the other two were successfully defused by the Gegana bomb-squad.
Mardigu said the devices were intentionally made not to be destructive. The bombs were of a low-explosive category and did not contain nails like those in the Bali bombing and Kuningan hotel bombing incidents.
“The bombs were like statements. The perpetrators wanted to send a warning message that they were still alive and pursuing their targets, although their leader, Abu Bakar Ba’asyir, has been detained and is now standing trial.
“And they succeeded in the sense that the incidents have attracted massive attention and interested media outlets,” he added.
Mardigu said he believed the Detachment 88 knew of the people behind the incidents. “They are now working to locate the groups. It won’t take long before the perpetrators are caught,” he said. (dar)
