Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad used his address to the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday to launch a broad assault on the United States, accusing Washington of violating human rights.

In a wide-ranging speech, Ahmadinejad laid into the administration of US President George W. Bush, who had earlier used his speech to the General Assembly to speak of human rights and freedom, notably on Iraq.<>

"Unfortunately human rights are being extensively violated by certain powers, especially by those who pretend to be their exclusive advocates," Ahmadinejad said, without mentioning the United States by name.

"Setting up secret prisons, abducting persons, trials and secret punishments without any regard to due process, extensive tapping of telephone conversations, intercepting private mail ... have become commonplace and prevalent," he added.

The seats of the US delegation were notably empty during Ahmadinejad’s comments.

He continued by criticizing the US-led invasion of Iraq, which he said was "occupied under the pretext of overthrowing the dictator and the existence of weapons of mass destruction."

"Unfortunately, we are witnessing the bitter truth that some powers do not value some nations or human beings and the only things that matter to them are themselves, their political parties and their groups."

"In their view, human rights are tantamount to profits for their companies and their friends. The rights and dignity of the American people are also being sacrificed for the selfish desires of those holding power" he added.

The Iranian President also sought to clarify his remarks calling for the "destruction" of Israel by likening its disappearance from the world to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Ahmadinejad said that the Palestinian people should be able to vote on their own independence, and he suggested that means Israel would no longer be a state.

"The Soviet Union: where is it now as an entity? It disappeared," Ahmadinejad told reporters in response to a question about his past remarks on Israel.

"Was it done through war? No, it was done through
the choice of the people. So allow the Palestinian people to decide for themselves." (afp/dar)
