The political dimension of Copa America

Sports, moreover that being as a great event, would absolutely close to possible political nuances. Even the sports originally aimed at cultivating nations’ relationship and promoting peace has been run as arena for political debates in nature. It can be seen on how an organizing nation prepare excellent management dealing with the great event. For participating nations, the oldest surviving international football competition in the world is to show their own sports power ratings.

By the fact, we have most of the time seen the support and boycotts over the sporting event. Even, during the Cold War’s Olympic there had been two blocs; western and eastern bloc using the occasion to organize mass boycotts one another. The similar scene was also found in football zones based on political considerations. The dispute between Arab and Israel has made a nation occupying Palestine of Asian Continent, places its sports in the European Zone. While Australia closing to Asia, because of political frictions, has placed its sports in the Carribean.<>

Bung Karno himself had noticed the tendency. For that reason, in 1960s he had courage to hold the Asian Games. As for him, the great event was to facilitate the development of sports and pull off a political maneuver. As a third world country leader, Bung Karno had shown his ability to search for political strengths of the third world countries. To have very nearly achieved his goal, Bung Karno had constructed a stadium so-called as (Bung Karno Stadium) and hotels as supporting instruments. The monumental measure has now regarded as spending a lot of money by capitalists. They have forgotten that awakening the spirit and the proud of the nation needs plenty of funds.

The respectful objective is now pursued by Venezuelan President Hugo Chaves as holding this year’s Copa America season in his country. His reputation is likely such a guarantee of the successful of the main international football tournament for the South American continent. But his pro-capitalism opposition has tried to sabotage the sporting event by organizing both demonstration and strike. The tournament would be disrupted to ruin Chaves reputation. Then, they would insult the pro-people president among the agencies of the world’s capitalism.

We are now extremely worried over the principle of old colonialism divide et impera that seems to be increasingly voiced. Palestinians have formerly been in harmony in facing Israel. Now they have been easily divided by Israel and its allies. At the same scene we have seen the dispute between Sunni and Shiite in Iraq. In the beloved country of ours, hardliners tend to be more progressive and be able to trigger conflicts. Venezuela as a solid nation in Latin America should uphold its solidity to avoid from any divide et impera- styled colonial political strategy.

Recently, the United Nations has introduced many kinds of programs on behalf of humanity, poverty eradication, education development and so forth. Unfortunately, the UN has just handled their consequences without scrutinizing their causes; colonialism and capitalism inherent with the way of thinking and as its agenda. If not, how the UN could instruct boycotts and invasion to Iraq and a recent planned attack to Iran. At the same time the UN has kept silent while witnessing Israel bombing both Palestine and Lebanon.

Why the UN let its own institutions like International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank having been inveigling the third world countries by giving loan that results in poverty. Whereas, in the history of the UN, there has been no a country supported by the UN monetary institutions being independent and prosperous. It was absolutely caused by the UN established by prominent colonials in 1945, while the flow of independence could no longer be blocked. So the colonial countries created a new colonization system through the settlement of the world institution. This in turn has made the third world countries be dominated politically, socially and culturally by the state empire building.

As wise, brilliant and courageous leaders, Bung Karno and Chaves did know the political system in such a way. This made both deeply concerned. The most important step was how to protect the nation before being able to protect the people. Of course, this was not easy. While at the same time imperialists’ hands have campaigned in the country on behalf of humanity, culture and so on to undermine the people’s independence and president’s dignity. The sports, if it can not be well managed it can be such a means of intervention. For the reason both could no longer be silent with the sporting event. Both have managed seriously for the nation’s dignity.

The failure of the Copa America by pro-capitalism opposition in Venezuela is to again undermine the dignity of the national leadership. It is difficult for the imperialists to dominate the oil-rich country if they cannot overthrow President Chaves. In this case, any intrigues, conspiracies, sabotages, and even coup are being tried by the pro-capitalism opposition in the name of democracy. So it is understandable if President Chaves are so serious in taking a stand against the rioters that would insult his beloved country. For that reason, he would crack down on opponents for the people and the nation. Be success Copa America. (Abdul Mun’im DZ)
