Without strengthening structural organization, the political power of Nahdlatul Ulama would possibly come to an end following the results of the recent legislative elections in which many NU cadres lost ground once again in the elections.
All this is due to the fact that the political parties whose emotional ties with NU could not gain significant votes. Some 90 percent of NU politicians becoming legislative hopefuls failed to find their way to the House of Representatives building.<>
Ex-chairman of the Ansor Youth Movement (GP Ansor) of Kudus HM Asyrofi Masyitho made the remarks on the sidelines of a meeting to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the NU youth wing organization here Friday (8/5).
Present also at the occasion were chairman of the Kudus NU Branch Board (PCNU) KH Chusnan BA, deputy chairman of PCNU Drs H Sanusi MH, chairman of the National Awakening Party of Kudus Wiyono SH and scores of NU activists across Kudus.
Asyrofi further explained that the greatness of the Indonesian biggest Muslim organization had not yet been capable of showing its truly political power because there have still been many NU cadres trapped into such pragmatic interests.
At this point, he stressed the importance of NU to strengthen its organizational structure, institutions and autonomous bodies as part of further taking into account of the emerging potentials within the Nahdliyin-based organization. (adb)
