Vice President Jusuf Kalla said Indonesia would accept financial aid from foreign countries for the quake victims in Padang, West Sumatra.

Kalla said that according to a directive from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesia should not ask for financial aid from overseas countries but if they wanted to assist the quake victims in Padang financially, the finance minister had opened an account number for it.<>

However, the vice president said foreign countries had sent volunteer teams to help in evacuation processes, and medical assistance for the victims instead of financial aid.

"So far no foreign country has given financial aid for the quake victims in Padang. A number of countries have given medical assistance but we already have more than enough of this kind of aid," the vice president said here on Saturday.

He said the funds needed for the rehabilitation of destroyed houses would not come for the regional administraion`s budget (APBD) but from the central government and it would be disbursed after the completion of a verification process.

"After the two-week verification process is over, reconstruction of houses which were slightly and heavily damaged will start, while the funds from the government for the rehabilitation will be adjusted with the level of damage," Kalla was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.

According to the vice president, emergency response efforts in the aftermath of the devastating magnitude-7.6 earthquake in Padang were running well.

"I have checked emergency response activity in the worst hit areas and I found things running well," the vice president said, adding that the evacuation process was primarily for survivors, and also for previously missing people and dead bodies.

The vice president said rescue workers were being assisted by police and military personnel, as well as domestic and foreign volunteers.

He said food stocks and medical supplies were enough to support the emergency response process.

According to the vice president, the emergency response to evacuate the quake victims, to evaluate, and to rehabilitate and reconstruct would last for two months and if needed it would be extended. (dar)
