As influential figures in society, Islamic scholars (ulema) should have the courage to raise criticism and feedback aimed at addressing any possible policies which can implode and cause severe harm to people. In addition, they should also be able to act proportionally in guiding people (tawasi bil haq).
General chairman of the lawmaking body (Rais Aam) of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Sahal Mahfudh made the remarks here on Friday, adding in telling the truth, the ulema should remain taking into account of his identity and integrity as religious figures.

"If it is a truth, it must be told and if not, the ulema must have the courage to tell it," the Pati-based ulema said.
He further said that that ulema should also use appropriate words while speaking to group of people and be careful in speaking. All this, he said, was not but to prevent any controversy amidst people.
"Never make problems and controversies. In addition to remaining firm in conveying the truth, the ulema should be consistent to seeding peace and wisdom," he said. (min)
