Chairman of the United Development Party (PPP) Suryadharma Ali said his party had yet to make up its mind on which other party to coalesce with ahead of the presidential election in July.
"Until now, the PPP has not yet decided on which other party to coalesce with on account of two different considerations," he said after a meeting with leaders of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), one of Indonesia`s largest Muslim organizations at the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) headquarters on Wednesday (6/5).<>
According to him, there were two demands within his party with regard to a coalition. Firstly, some who wanted the party to coalesce with the Democratic Party or President Yudhoyono and secondly, those who desired to coalesce with the Gerindra (Greater Indonesia Movement) Party led by Prabowo Subianto.
"Hopefully, before May 12, we will have decided the direction of our party`s coalition," he was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
Earlier, the result of the party`s national leadership meeting gave the mandate to the party chairman to determine the steps relating to the party`s coalition.
Suryadharma Ali said he was now in a position like the driver of a car and therefore he had to be careful in taking passengers.
The PPP chairman said he had visited the NU headquarters at the invitation of the NU leaders who wanted to know the present political developments.
"It`s only an ordinary meeting, the organization`s executives of whom are eager to know the political developments in the runup to the presidential election," he said. (dar)
