State-owned railway company PT Kereta Api (KA) will provide special coaches for women and elder people on long-distance economy class trains during the Idul Fitri holiday.

"This is part of our services to give security and comfort to home-bound travelers who need special care such as women and old people," Bambang S Prayitno, a spokesman of the PT KA`s Operation 2 in Bandung, said Sunday.r />
On each trip, PT KA will add a special coach to be placed near the locomotive, for women and elderly people with around 106 seats, he said.

The special service is aimed among other things at preventing sexual harassment, according to him.

To avoid long queues, PT KA will open ticket counters two days before the departure of economy-class trains.

Starting on September 4, or six days before Idul Fitri, PT KA will operate more trains, namely KA Pasundan serving Bandung (West Java)- Surabaya (East Java), KA Kutojaya Selatan, and KA Kahuripan.

PT KA also plans to add frequencies of train trips to carry home-bound travelers using the economy-class trains.

The exodus of millions of annual home-bound travelers is expected to start in the next two weeks and will peak one day before the post-fasting Idul Fitri or Lebaran holidays which begin on September 10, 2010.

Last year the country saw about 27 million travelers using all modes of land, sea and air transportation means throughout the country. (ant/dar)
