Palestinian ambassador expresses concern over damage to religious Facilities

Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia Fariz N. Mehdawi expressed concern here on Sunday over the damage to religious facilities caused by earthquake which struck West Java early in September.
Expressing his gratitude for being able to visit the earthquake-affected areas here along with Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni, the ambassador said that the Indonesian people were steadfast and able to maintain their firm faith in the face of natural disasters.<>
The Palestinian ambassador and the chiefs of mission of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Syria, Qatar and Kuwait, conducted an observation tour of the quake affected areas in Garut with Maftuh Basyuni on Sunday.
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale with its epicenter located 142 km southwest of Tasikmalaya, West Java, on Wednesday (September 2) jolted West Java district towns, damaged many buildings, killed about 74 people and left 34 others missing.
In the meantime, Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni said that his side would do its best to provide assistance for improving the conditions of madrasahs (Islamic schools) and other religious facilities.
Garut District Head Aceng H.M Fikri said the damage to religious facilities in his region reached Rp100 billion.
He said that a total of 339 mosques were destroyed and 714 others damaged. The earth quake also destroyed 33 madrashs and damaged 64 others. It also damaged 87 pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools).
A total of 10,273 families or 40,894 people had been evacuated, many of whom urging the regional government to provide them with emergency family tents to be set up in the premises of their damaged houses.
The number of houses destroyed by the quake reached 13,139, while those damaged and slightly affected respectively reached 7,037 and 25,699 with an estimated total material loss of Rp451.9 billion. (dar)
