NU top figure HM Rozy Munir installed to be ambassador to Qatar

Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) for foreign affairs HM Rozy Munir was installed Wednesday to be ambassador to the Kingdom of Qatar for coming three years.

Rozy told NU Online news portal that in increasing the relations between Indonesia and Qatar, he would focus more on the first three matters namely investment, trade, and tourism.<>

He said that many sectors could be obtained by providing experts and in mining, construction, hotel affairs, medical specialists, and so on.

"We also strive to attract tourists from Qatar to come to Indonesia as now there are direct flights from Doha to both Jakarta and Bali," Rozy said.

He further explained that he would also focus on a previous ambassador's unfinished Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Joint Investment Fund.

As the top figure of the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization evolving the concept of Islam as mercy for the universe (rahmatan lil alamin), he would seed the NU concept in Qatar.

On Wednesday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono installed seven new ambassadors to represent Indonesia abroad, including the country's new envoy to the United Nations.

The other six envoys are destined for Lebanon, Egypt, Qatar, the Vatican, Bulgaria and Namibia.

At the ceremony, held at the State Palace, the President also assigned R. Bagus Hapsoro as Indonesia's new ambassador to Lebanon, and Abdurrahman Mohammad Fachir to Egypt.

Suprapto Martosetomo will meanwhile represent Indonesia at the Vatican, while Immanuel Robert Inkiriwang will serve as envoy to Bulgaria.

Leonardus Widayatmo will head Indonesia's diplomatic mission in the southern African nation of Namibia.

All the new ambassadors, except for Rozy Munir, are career diplomats. Rozy, a former minister in Abdurrahman Wahid's cabinet, is now the chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) for foreign affairs. (mkf)
